Thiago Silva, Chilwell and Pulisic – Chelsea injury news ahead of Barnsley clash

Chelsea return to Carabao Cup action on Wednesday night when they host Barnsley in the third round of the competition.

It’s a chance for Frank Lampard’s side to bounce back from the weekend defeat by Liverpool in the Premier League.

The Blues boss is expected to ring the changes to his side for the visit of the Tykes.

Some players on the periphery of Lampard’s squad are expected to get some game time as he keeps as many first-team stars as fresh as possible.

Chelsea could be boosted by the return of a number of players for the game following injury.

Here is the latest on the injury front.

Hakim Ziyech

The 27-year-old was ruled out of the Liverpool game due to a knee injury he picked up in the pre-season game with Brighton.

He subsequently missed the league opener against the Seagulls, with Lampard admitting it could take a few weeks for the Moroccan to recover.

Lampard stated that Ziyech is “getting closer” ahead of the game against Barnsley but he is unlikely to be risked.

It means his wait for a competitive debut for the Blues goes on.

Ben Chilwell

The summer arrival from Leicester City is back in training having recovered from a heel injury.

The 23-year-old joined the Blues with the injury but after doing some individual work at Cobham, he is now nearing full fitness.

Lampard has confirmed Chilwell will be in the matchday squad to face the Tykes so is in line for his Chelsea debut.

Andreas Christensen

Though not an injury, Christensen will be missing the clash against Barnsley due to the red card picked up against Liverpool.

However, it is only a one-match suspension, so he can return against West Brom at the weekend.

The American winger is still not fully fit and will miss out on the cup game.

Like Ziyech, Lampard confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the American is closing in on a return to first-team football but this game comes too soon.

It is hoped he will be available for Saturday’s game with newly promoted West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Like Chilwell, the former Paris Saint-Germain captain was not ready for his Chelsea debut against Liverpool.

The centre-back has been in training with the first-team squad over the past week, but Lampard confirmed that the centre-back was slightly short of fitness for the Liverpool game.

The Carabao Cup fixture could prove an ideal opportunity for the defender to be given his Chelsea debut, and Lampard revealed that he is in the squad for the clash but a decision is yet to be made on how many minutes the defender will get.

Billy Gilmour

Young Scottish midfielder Gilmour remains a long-term absentee from the senior squad.

It’s down to a knee operation he had to undergo earlier this summer following the win over Crystal Palace towards the end of last season.

At the time, boss Frank Lampard said: “His attitude will get him back as quick as he can, his character is fantastic, particularly with his age.

“The personality he has shown to get himself into the first team, I’m very sure he will show the same character in doing everything right with his rehab.”

Gilmour is not expected back until October at the earliest.
