Six herdsmen arrested for alleged involvement in Benue killings

-The Benue state police force on Friday confirmed the arrest of six herdsmen for their alleged involvement in the killing of 19 people in Akor village in Benue state.

The suspects upon investigation are being arraigned and are in the magistrate court in Markurdi sitting for questioning, the suspects are being arraigned at a chief magistrate court 1, The case is being overseen by Chief Magistrate, Isaac Ajim.

Among those killed in the attack were a pregnant woman killed and five others. The death toll, from report gathered, later increased to 20. The governor of the state, Samuel Ortom, confirmed the number of casualties just after the state Security Council meeting was convened.

After the visit of those victims hospitalized at the Benue state university teaching hospital, it was confirmed that the hospital had received 11 bodies and nine injured victims out of whom three died while receiving treatment.

It was reported that the killings which took place in Benue had been described by leaders of the state as a planned genocide. The claim was made by three socio-cultural groups- Mdzough U Tiv, Idoma National Forum and Omi Ny’Igede- at a joint news conference in Abuja, the nations’ capital, on Thursday, January 4.
