Sea cow rescued by a fisherman in Lagos [Photo]

A big sea cow real name manatee havs been rescued alive by the fisherman in a riverine community in the Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

The sea cow was caught by the trap of a fisherman in that area but the the intervention of the government of Lagos rescued the endangered mammal from being turned into food.

The manatee was then taken to Origin Zoo in the Ikorodu where it is kept.

The manatee is said to have measured up to 13 feet with as much weight as 590 kilogrammes, which graze on water plants in tropical seas and consume about 10 to 15 per cent of its body weight in vegetation.

Speaking abouth the matter the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Olayiwole Onasanya, said immediately the ministry got the information, the state government moved to rescue the huge aquatic herbivorous mammal before residents could turn it to food.
