Rwanda appeals for extradition of genocide perpetrators

The Republic of Rwanda has appealed for the extradition of genocide perpetrators around the world.

This was contained in a press statement, on Friday, by the Rwanda High Commission on the 29th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi’.

On April 7, 2023, Rwanda marked the 29th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi – #Kwibuka29.

The commemoration is observed under the multi-year theme, “Remember – Unite – Renew”.

Twenty-nine years after, in parts of the world, there have been attempts in resurrecting the hate speech and advocating denial and revisionism.

However, according to the statement, “Rwanda will never be insensitive to that and will spare no effort to maintain the never again resolve.

“This aligns very well with the commitment of nations of the world by the UN Resolution A/RES/74/273 of 21st April 2020 (on the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda) and calls for sustained attention from all of us in all our areas of responsibility and activity.

“#Kwibuka29 affords an opportunity for reiterating a vivid appeal to the International Community concerning suspected genocide perpetrators still at large in different countries around the world, which have shown little or no preoccupation in bringing them to justice or extraditing them to Rwanda to be tried. Sincere appreciation is extended to those Governments that have made a commendable effort to that end.”

Rwanda High Commissioner to Nigeria, Amb. Stanislas Kamanzi, said “On this solemn day, we gather to honor the memory of the over one million Tutsis of Rwanda, who were exterminated in 100 days in Rwanda 29 years ago, and pay tribute to the sacrifice and resilience of the survivors.”
