Great Nigerian Music Legend Ras Kimono is dead

What a great lost Nigerian Music Legend Ras Kimono is dead. Nigeria has lost of her great music legend Ras Kimono. The man died on Sunday at the age of 60 years. He was rushed to the hospital yesterday after he was reported feeling some strange things in his body. Ras Kimono died in the hospital today [Sunday].

Confirming the news to the public, a factional Chairman of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Tony Okoroji said it was huge lost to the music industry.

Top members of the music industry have started reacted to his death, COSON deeply regrets to announce the passing on of a frontline member of our board – great African and great musician, the reggae toaster, the great Ras Kimono Onwubuya,” he added in a text.

In the same view, President of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Mr Pretty Okafor, said he was shocked when he received the news that the reggae artiste had died.

Meet late Ras Kimono

Ras Kimono was a great Nigerian reggae artist in 80s. He was born in Delta State Nigeria. He ventured into the music world at the early age while he was a student of Gbenoba Secondary School Agbor.  He joined the legendary Jastix Reggae Ital, alongside Majek Fashek, Amos McRoy Jegg and Black Rice Osagie in 1985. The reggae artist revealed to the people that poverty, inequality and hardship he witnessed in his early life motivated him to the music icon.

He was fully blow out in 1985 when he released his solo debut album “Under pressure” on the Premier Music label in 1989. The album took him out to various countries of the world. He toured round most of Africa countries,  Europe and the USA, promoting his brand of Reggae music. He has won several awards including the Nigeria Music Awards, Fame Music Awards and many more. by 2010.
