Mother pours kerosene on son sets him of fire. The boy set ablaze by his mother has died in the hospital. We reported yesterday that a mother has been arrested in Umuahia after she set her teen son on fire because he stole an MP3 from a neighbour.

He died in the early hours of today June 26th at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia where he was being treated for the serious burns he sustained. Prince was the only son.

14-year-old Prince Odum, of Amuzukwu Ibeku in Abia state, had his hands tied by his mother Chinyere Odum after she found out that he stole from a neighbour. She then doused him with kerosene and set him on fire

Chinyere, a mother of three, is reportedly known to be abusive towards her kids. According to neighbours, she’s been known to flog Prince, who is her only son, with fire wood. Neighbours also say the family is dysfunctional.

Prince suffered horrible burns all over his body and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia. But the hospital is ill equipped to handle his injuries so plans are being made to have him transferred to UNTH in Enugu state.

In spite of his injuries, witnesses say that when Prince saw his mother being questioned by the police, he broke down in tears and took the blame. He told officers it was his fault and pleaded with them to release his mother. He also promised his mother that he would never do wrong again.
