Frank Lampard could choose to rotate his squad when Chelsea face Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley this evening (6pm).
Frank Lampard may look to protect some of his star players when Chelsea face Manchester United in the FA Cup tonight. The Blues have already lost three times to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this season but Champions League qualification is expected to take priority over payback.
Chelsea may therefore rotate their first-team squad in an attempt to keep players fresh for what could be a crucial Premier League clash with Liverpool on Wednesday.
Lampard’s men are currently a point ahead of Leicester and United in the table, knowing only two of those three teams can qualify for the Champions League.
Chelsea must win both games to guarantee their spot in Europe’s top tournament next season – qualification for which could define their transfer window.
The revenue generated by another year in the Champions League will help fund Chelsea’s aggressive transfer policy this summer and may prove the difference in signing priority targets Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell.
Lampard is subsequently faced with a selection headache whereby he must decide which players to rest against a United side who are on a 19-match unbeaten streak stretching back to January.
Christian Pulisic, Willian and Olivier Giroud have proved to be Chelsea’s most valuable players since the end of lockdown, with the trio providing 12 goals and six assists between them.
Lampard is highly unlikely to rest all three attackers but Willian looked particularly jaded last time out in the 1-0 win over Norwich and could make way for Callum Hudson-Odoi.
