The Peoples Democratic Party Akwa Ibom in Akwa Ibom on Monday debunked the claim by Senator Godswill Akpabio that he was expelled by the party.
The state publicity secretary of the PDP, Comrade Ini Ememobong in a press conference on Monday said that state executive committee of the party was not aware of Akpabio’s expulsion.
”There is no way that Senator Akpabio could have been expelled by the party, without the concurrence of the State Executive Committee of the party.
”There is no record showing the existence of such a punitive move undertaken against the Senator by his ward or chapter executive council “.
Ememobong maintained that “Chief Akpabio had announced to the world on August 8, 2018 that he was defecting from the PDP to the APC in pursuit of National interest and to stem the tide of defections at the National Assembly.
But Akpabio through his media aide, Anietie Ekong has maintained that the party’s ward expelled him before his defection on August 8, 2018.
Ekong in a telephone chat said the former senate minority leader left the PDP because he was expelled from the party, adding that evidence of his expulsion was tendered in court.
It could be recalled that the former senate minority leader had on the 15th of May 2019 told a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja that he defected from the PDP to APC to avoid becoming a “political orphan” after his “suspension and subsequent expulsion” from the PDP
Akpabio also told Justice Okon Abang that he was “suspended by the PDP by his immediate ward and was later expelled from the same PDP at the local government level “, adding that in line with provision of section 40 of the 1999, he had to opt for the APC, as the alternate party to actualise his interest.
