Be good ambassadors, Obasanjo tells US-based Nigerians

Published

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed worry that Nigerians relate as friends while outside the country but act like enemies when in the country.

He noted that Nigerians in the diaspora are making the country proud in their different areas of endeavour.

The former president spoke at an evening reception held in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, according to a statement on Thursday by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi.

The statement said Obasanjo spoke on behalf of a delegation of eminent traditional leaders and academics to Rutgers University, among them the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola.

While expressing satisfaction with the unity exhibited among Nigerians in the US, Obasanjo urged them to continue to be good ambassadors of their country.

He said, “Nigerian nationals are often very united when they are abroad, but (it is) something else when they return to the country. Therefore, I want to urge (you) all to be good citizens, not only where you are, but when also you come home to Nigeria.”

He lauded the Rutgers University management for the warm reception accorded the delegation and for the “far-reaching engagements.”
